couple discusses the Warning Signs of Infection After Abortion

If you’ve recently had an abortion or you’re considering having one, understanding some of the warning signs of infection is important to protect your health.

Vaginal bleeding and abdominal cramping are side effects to expect during an abortion. However, sometimes an infection can follow, worsening if left untreated. We’ll share more details on this condition below.

If you are facing an unintended pregnancy and considering abortion, it is important to get an ultrasound first. Pregnancy Resources Plus offers no-cost, confidential services, including pregnancy testing and limited ultrasounds, to give you the answers you need.

We also offer post-abortion support if you’re struggling with your emotions after having an abortion. Our team is here to listen to you in a non-judgmental safe space.

Why Infection Can Happen After an Abortion

Infection can happen after an abortion if bacteria have entered the uterus or if tissue remains in the uterus after an abortion, which is known as an incomplete abortion.

The chances of infection are low, but it can happen in both surgical and medical abortions; knowing the signs protects your health so you can act fast.

If the infection is not treated quickly, this could lead to a more severe infection of your reproductive organs, including pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), which has the potential to cause infertility or an ectopic pregnancy.

The Warning Signs of a Post-Abortion Infection

Medical abortion will always include vaginal bleeding and abdominal cramping, whereas a surgical abortion will include mild cramping and light vaginal bleeding or spotting.

Both surgical and medical abortions include similar infection symptoms.

Some signs of infection for either type of abortion include:

  • Foul-smelling odor from the vagina
  • Heavy bleeding, such as soaking two or more pads per hour for two consecutive hours
  • Fast heart rate
  • Chills or body aches
  • A fever that lasts more than 4 hours or starts in the days after taking misoprostol
  • Severe abdominal pain or pain that worsens
  • Lasting dizziness or lightheadedness

If you have any of the above symptoms, contact your healthcare provider immediately for evaluation and potential treatment. Infections can escalate quickly, so it’s important not to delay.
